Maintaining a healthy dog weight

Written by Pesky Pooch (Leave It partner)

Keeping your dog in a healthy weight range is one of the best things you can do to help give your furry friend a long, healthy and happy life. Excess weight and obesity can reduce the lifespan by up to 4 years and cause a large range of medical issues.

The first step to managing your dog’s weight is knowing how much you should feed them, most brand pet food will give a guide into what is required for your dog based on their weight and age. It’s important to measure food at every meal to ensure you are feeding them the correct amount.

Another important thing to do is to keep track of snacks and treats.

Did you know that one cube of cheese is the equivalent to a hamburger for a dog?

So be mindful of the treats they are getting. Supplying your dog with healthy alternatives for treats such as carrot sticks, deer antler and more will give them the nutrients they need to keep healthy and also reduce stress by chewing. Chewing is great for dogs as it releases endorphins, a chemical that reduces stress, thereby helping improve their overall health as high stress has a negative correlation with life expectancy.

Lastly, just like people, dogs lose weight by consuming fewer calories than they burn. So get out your walking shoes and set an exercise schedule for you and your furry friend. If walking isn’t an option, incorporate more playtime around the house to get that heart rate up. The right diet and exercise is one of the best things you can do to help give your furry friend a long and healthy life.
